FYI, a way check to see if your tranny is damaged, other than the obvious
trans fluid leaking out of a gaping hole that was not there a few moments
ago, (actually most of the TFS is the result of a failing diff assembly) is
to, provided your car is driveable, turn your wheel all the way to lock,
either left or right and drive in a circle increasing your speed slightly
after each revolution. You don't have to go very fast, maybe 10-15 mph at
max. This causes the spider gears to spin at a faster rate and if there is
a problem, you will hear a loud pop (spider gear(s) launching off the
planetary gears, probably in pieces) and your car will no longer move.
Good bye tranny :~(. If your tranny is still in working order this will
not happen and you can probably rule out TFS.

Does it sound like a turbo, but without the extra power? That's the sound
that my tranny made just before it locked up. I think the broken ring gear
and missing gear oil make the noise. Not trying to alarm you, but you
should give it the donut test. I doubt you have TFS if you are driving the
car on a daily basis, but it can't hurt to check, right? The test involves
finding a lot and turning one direction at full lock for a few rotations
and then flipping and going the other direction for a few rotations. If the
diff is gonna completely go, this should make it happen. Do this when you
have time to wait for a tow truck.
