Hi, folks. My first post. I was doing my 30k plug replacement today
on my '97 and one of the slot/tabs on the plug tool broke off while
changing the 4th plug (not #4, just the fourth one I did), the 5th was
OK but the 6th (actually #5, back/driverside) would not come out with
the damaged tool. I will get a new tool from the dealer or someone
but does anyone know of an aftermarket tool that is more durable?
Perhaps it's the just the low mileage vs. build year that made the
last connector sticky. The others seemed OK but the tool did break
earlier in the job. And the engine was cold. Based on what I had
read on the site, I was installing the copper, dual electrode Bosch's.
I'll let you know what I think.

I know what some of you must be thinking: just 30k on a '97?. I really
lucked out. Not only did I find a sweet low miler back in January,
the VW dealer selling it mis-advertised it online for only $10,800!
And they had to use that price. I traded in a '99 Passat wagon Turbo
and was looking for some cash and a good car. GTI VR6 + $4800 =
happiness. We are the Green Dragon.

They have a metal plug tool, and have one of the best reputations for knowledge
and service.
Probably cheaper than dealership too!!

Dealer wouldn't sell me theirs. So I almost ordered the one from parts4vws
(germanautoparts has it too). Then my mechanic told me he bought an even
better one off the Snap-On truck for like half the price!! So I'm going to
hang out there when the truck comes and buy one.

PS, My mech lent me the tool to do the job, and what took an hour with two
broken plastic ones, took 2 minutes with the metal one!! Worth every penny.

Okay I can finally reply to this as I finally bought the tool (stumbled upon
a Snap-On truck late last night).
I guess my mech was a little off on the price. It was C$60 (=US$39). I'm
just impressed they actually carry this thing around in the truck at all
times (BTW the truck weighs 8 tons!).
So it's the same price as the parts4vws/germanautoparts one but an even
better tool.
And I didn't have to worry about shipping, taxes, etc.

Techtonics Tuning Carries a stainless steel
version, Part # 981.800,
for $36 + 2Ship + 5handling = $43.

I thought that was high until I saw the Snap-On
price. And we all like to keep the VW Tuners in

I bought a plug tool off of vwvortex. Someone in canada machines
them themselves. I compared it to an "original" and it was almost
identical. I paid $30 including shipping. This was just 2 weeks ago,
so checked in the classified and do a search. I was pretty happy at
how much easier it was than using the cheap-ass plastic one... Matt
